Cowboy Hats Should You Get Felt, Straw or Leather?

It has been almost 150 years since John Stetson sold the first cowboy hats. Their appeal was instantaneous, primarily because these hats filled a need. Or several needs actually. They offered protection from the elements like bitter cold wind, rain, or the suns burning rays. If the campfire was dwindling, their large brims could easily be used to fan the flames. And for the thirsty cowboy, he could carry water from a nearby stream in the crown. And while the times have changed, the popularity of cowboy hats has only increased, but for different reasons.
It's not about keeping the fire going or even protection from the elements for most people anymore. It's about fashion. These hats are a popular culture hit. Check out the latest gossip magazines and you'll see celebrities of all kinds wearing a cowboy hat. Hollywood actors, fashion models and rock musicians can all be seen sporting this piece of headwear. Of course as the popularity of cowboy hats increases, so too does the number of styles and choices. The kind of cowboy hat you choose should depend largely on its function.
When most people think of cowboy hats, they think of felt. These hats look good and with proper care, can last a very long time. These provide all the benefits people needed in the old west, and come in enough colors and styles and adorned with enough accessories to make even the most fashion conscious individual happy. On a hot summer day, these hats are great for protecting you from the suns rays. But that comes at a cost. These hats are hot. A lot of heat, as you well know, escapes from your head. These hats will trap that heat in, and when the temperature climbs into triple digits, it can be somewhat uncomfortable.
Thus the increase in the popularity of straw cowboy hats. Chances are you've seen your neighbor wearing one as he or she mows the grass and works in the yard or garden. The brim still keeps the sun out of your eyes, but the air is able to circulate through the weave in the straw. They're a bit more comfortable in the heat, but don't do much in the cold or rain and won't keep the suns harmful rays off your head, which can be a drawback if your hair is thinning. Another bonus of straw cowboy hats is they are generally less expensive, although some can still be quite costly depending on the kind of straw that is used. If you're looking for something to wear while working outside, you can typically pick one of these up at your local discount store for a very low price. If fashion and quality is your aim, then you'll likely have to look elsewhere and expect to pay more.
Leather cowboy hats are typically worn by those looking for the best. These can be very pricey, depending of course on the quality of the leather. But they are more durable than felt or straw. If a cowboy hat is something you'll wear every day, for both work and play, it makes sense to get something that's made from a higher quality material. A leather cowboy hat certainly fits the bill. Wait for a sale and you'll find one you like at a reasonable price.
One other cowboy hat that is making its way to the scene is the foam cowboy hat. You've seen those jumbo things worn by fans at sporting events. These serve no other purpose other then to say "Look at me, I'm goofy." Nothing more needs to be said about those.

Proper Care For Cowboy Hats

Cowboy hats have been considered as a sign of masculinity for decades. Moreover, the hats are also important parts of American tradition and heritage. The hats first gained popularity in the West and were used by the cowboys for work and social events. But recently, cowboys hats are not only considered functional or cultural. The hats have made the leap from function to fashion. No longer confined to outdoor work and shepherding sheep, the hats made their presence felt in today's fashion scene.
Initially made to withstand extreme weather conditions like rain, snow, and Western heat, contemporary cowboy hats maintain their quality. But as a tribute to modern fashion, the hat styles and materials have varied over the years. Now, there is a number of different designs, styles, and colors. There are even designers whose sole purpose is to make fashionable hats. Despite the evolution of these hats, experts still hold to the popular opinion that custom hats are better. Of course, custom hats are more expensive. According to Joella Torres, making sure that custom hats are cared for properly should be a top priority for consumers. Torres comes from a family of hat makers and currently heads a cowboy hats company. She gives easy maintenance tips for every cowboy hat enthusiast.
First, cowboy hats can take on natural elements like snow or rain. However, before storage, the hats must be air-dried. A common mistake that is fatal to the hats is exposure to heat. A dry and clean corner where the hats can sit until dried is enough. Second, the hats are constructed using fabric and other natural materials like felt or fur. This means that the hats are prone to staining. Torres warns hat enthusiasts not to rub or wipe off thick substances like mud or drips from the hats. Wiping these substances while fresh may cause it to seep into the hats' material, creating unsightly stains. The trick is to let these substances dry completely then scrape them off with rulers or credit cards. For hats made of different materials like shag, regular brushing should keep the sheen longer. Washing these hats are not recommended since washing makes the hair fall off.
Storage is also an important consideration in hat maintenance. Keeping hats in their original boxes consumes too much space. Not to mention that the boxes are prone to insect holes. Torres advises keeping cowboy hats in individual plastic bags with twist tie locks. Cowboy hats are interesting and expensive pieces, so letting insects get to them is tantamount to losing a good investment.

Iconic Hats - The Cowboy Hat

Beigh Gambler Cowboy Hat

Although associated with the American West. arguably the cowboy hat is not an American creation. There is no doubt that hats with big brims and large crowns had been popular in Mexico, coming to Mexico from Spain, well before "the American West was won." Historians trace the origins in Spain to the European invasions by the very accomplished horsemen from Mongolia. Nevertheless, like all hat styles, modifications by such notables as John B. Stetson, did bring new iterations on this old theme and what we now know as the cowboy hat became inextricably tied to a place and time.
The American West in both fact and legend was (and to a great extent still is) filled with such hats. John B. Stetson - the hat style and his name have become synonymous - introduced "The Boss of the Plains" and became a multi-millionaire. His story is American legend and resembles a cross between that of real life personality Johnny Appleseed and the fictional protagonists created by Horatio Alger. Stetson's rags beginning, ends with a 1906 death when his factory was turning out four million cowboy hats a year. Here was a hat that suited its surroundings. The big brim and high crown protected the cowboy from the elements--sun, rain, hail, snow, dust, mosquitoes and flies, and low branches. He could carry water in his hat or use it to whip his horse or cow. And, of course, this big handsome hat, in short order became his sartorial piece de resistance when courting the ladies.
Early on, the style was picked up by notables like The Texas Rangers, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, Annie Oakley, and even George Custer was wearing a Stetson when he met his fate at Little Big Horn. When the movies came along, Tom Mix, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, and, of course, John Wayne all became personalities that were inseparable from their hats. Politicians, like Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan, and currently George W. Bush, are happy to wear their western hats whereby they associate themselves with both their home states and the values of the Old West. The style is forever being tweaked by designers and milliners and often becomes the leading style of the moment for women. Now is such a time.
The movie Runaway Bride came along about the same time that pop stars Madonna and Mary Blige were wearing cowboy hats on stage and the fashion trend reached a tipping point and just took off. Around the world, the style's popularity will come and go as is the nature of fashion trends, but the place and time of the cowboy hat and what it symbolizes will forever be etched in history.

Felt Cowboy Hats - Proper Care To Make Them Last

Like anything else, felt cowboy hats will last longer if you care for them properly. Chances are your new hat cost you a pretty good chunk of change. Doesn't it make sense to take care of it?
So how do you keep it nice? We'll start with the obvious. Felt cowboy hats are hard to clean so let's try to keep it clean instead. Not an easy task considering how easily dirt attaches itself to the felt. That's why it's so important to wash your hands before grabbing for your hat. Dirt and skin oils are a pain to get out of felt.
OK, your hands are clean and your hat is sitting on the table. You're ready to pick it up and put it on. I bet your natural instinct is to just grab it by the crown. Wrong answer. Pick up your hat by the brim. And once it's on your head, adjust it by the brim as well. Don't push down or back and forth on the crown. This will cause the hat to lose it's shape. Using the front and back brim also helps keep the crown clean.
And why is your hat sitting on the table brim side down anyway? Obviously it's always best to store your hat in the original box. But if you don't have that box, be sure to set it upside down. This is so important if you want the brim to keep its original shape. Sit it on the brim, and the brim will flatten over time. The only time cowboy hats should be stored right side up is if you have a hat stand. Even in the original box, the box should be stored upside down. It's just another way to help the hat keep it's shape.
Here's another thing you must not do. Never store your felt cowboy hat where it can get really hot. For instance don't leave it in the car on a hot summer day and don't leave it near a heating vent when storing it in your house in the winter. At least avoid this if you want your hat to fit. Inside the brim of your hat is a sweat band. Excessive heat will shrink this band. The next thing you know your hat will be two sizes to small.
Of course you know you don't want your hat to get wet. But you also know that sometimes it is unavoidable. Chances are, you will need to reshape the brim. Do this carefully. And avoid the temptation to speed up the drying process by using a blow dryer or a heat lamp. Felt cowboy hats need to dry naturally if at all possible. A nifty trick you can try is turning the sweat band inside out. Then place the hat down on a table. With the sweat band turned down, the hat will actually be standing on the band. Finally, when your hat is completely dry, you can reshape it into it's proper form.
Truthfully, high quality felt cowboy hats won't be too damaged by a little water. But it's still worth the few dollars to invest in a cover for those days you know it is going to rain.
Simply following these few tips should keep your new cowboy hat looking good and fitting well for a long time.

What You Need to Know About Cowboy Hats

Cowboy hats have long been a part of the American culture and heritage, a symbol for masculinity and toughness. For many decades, they have remained a top favorite headwear among men who does not only adore the rugged tough look it gives but also know of the functionality it serves. But aside from making men look tough and strong, there's still indeed a lot more to know about cowboy hats.
History of cowboy hats
For one, most of us hardly know where cowboy hats have originated. But historical records point out that the first ever cowboy hat was created by a hat maker named John B. Stetson in 1865. The first cowboy hat was a stetson cowboy hat which gradually found its way into the attire get-up of the people living in the western part of the United States .
Functions
Because of its diverse functionality, the cowboy hat became popular in no time. Its wide brim provided shade from the scorching heat of the sun, making it a useful part of a cowboy's everyday attire. Other than that, the hat's wide brim was also used to fan a camp fire or wave to other people at a distance.
Care tips
One important care tip about cowboy hats is that they must always be air-dried. Never expose a hat to a heat source such as a heater, fireplace or stove because this can damage the hat's material.
Second, you should take note that cowboy hats that are made of felt or fur are more prone to staining. But it's not advisable to rub off muds or drips from the hat because this will only cause for the substance to seep deeper into the material. Instead let the mud or drip dry off completely than scrape it off after it has solidified.
Third, regular brushing is required for hats made of different materials like shag. It's not recommended to wash these hats with water because this causes for hair fall.
Fourth tip is regarding storage which is a significant part of maintaining your hat. It is not suitable for hats to be kept in their original boxes because they take up a lot of space. Either store the hats on a hat rack or if you're not going to use it for a long time, keep them in cloth bags.
Cowboy hats of today
Today, many people still don this symbolic hat but not anymore for the functionality or the symbolism that it represents but because it has evolved from being a headgear of function to a fashion item to wear during social events and gatherings. Not only is it a symbol of culture and tradition but also has become a popular fashion statement.
People may wear cowboy hats for functionality or maybe because of its symbolic representation. Some may wear it because it's the fad or that it looks cool. However way any of us wear the cowboy hat, the fact still remains that it is indeed an integral part of the American culture which will stay with us eternally.

History of Cowboy Hats

The history of cowboy hats starts with the name, John Batterson Stetson. In the later years of 1860?s the hats were associated with heroism. It was then adapted to the uniform of the cavalry force. The media popularized these hats to costume great warriors in the screen. It then, served as the universal image for the sporty native hero of America. Now they are fashion symbols, which reflect the traditional style of sturdiness.
History states that Stetson had made a wide-brimmed, high-crowned hat from common fur of the horse hides, during his wild hunting tours to fulfill a bet. Its multipurpose functions such as large brim to protect the sun, the crown to fetch water or fan the fire, whip the horse etc gained public acceptance. The term cowboy hat was coined from its popularity among the cowboys. Stetson sold the first hat of its type in Central City, Colorado in the name ?Boss of the Plains,? for $5, which was more commonly known as the "ten-gallon cowboy hat". Some contradict the credit of invention to Stetson with the argument that the ranchers of Mexico and Texas had the practice of using wide trimmed fur-felt hat in the mid 1800 called "Sombreros". It was also popular in Spain. They consider that Stetson did not invent the hat, only popularized it.
The Pork Pie was the dominant style of cowboy hats in the 1860's. The hat was soft inexpensive with the features of telescope crown and brim of 3". It was common till the late 1870's. The 4x4 was the dominant hat style of rural America from about 1790 until about 1880. It is now popular in names such as "Boss of the plains," "Trapper," "planter?. These early cowboy hats have a distinctive feature of three- piece lining. Hamburg was another popular style of cowboy hat with the letter M style crown.
The 20th century revolutionized the making of cow boy hats with the transition from hand woven hats to machine made hats.

Caring for Your Stetson Cowboy Hat

You love your Stetson cowboy hat, there's no doubt about that. And why wouldn't you? Aside from being a historic piece of head wear (the first cowboy hat was invented by a hat maker named John B. Stetson in 1865, from whom this hat is named after) it has become a favorite part of your wardrobe for its aesthetic beauty and sturdiness.
It only follows that you'd want to take absolute care for your favorite cowboy hat. Here are a few tips to do just that:
Store your hat upside down on its crown and store it in a cool dry place. Store your hat on a hat rack or if you're not going to use it for a long time, keep inside a hat box. Placing it in near a heat source like stove or fireplace will shrink the cowboy hat's sweatband which also causes the hat to shrink. Constant exposure to heat will have the hat no longer fit you. That's why it's best to stay it away from any source of heat. Always remember that proper storage is the key in keeping the perfect form of your hat.
Avoid holding your hat on the crown. It's better to handle it by touching the brim when you pick it up, wear it or adjust it. Also be sure that your hands are always clean when you touch your hat as not to leave any mark or stain on your hat.
Clean your hat by using a clean damp cloth or hat sponge to get rid of surface dust and dirt. Rub the cloth counter clockwise gently towards the back of the hat. Don't use cleaning solutions for cleaning your hat because the strong chemicals in it may damage the hat's material.
Occasionally, turn down the sweatband of the hat to dry and so that perspiration and oil from the hair will evaporate instead of seep into the hat.
Air dry your hat naturally by hanging it on a hat rack. Never dry your hat by putting it under direct or even just near any heat source like heater, furnace, stove or chimney. You may think that you're doing your hat a favor by speeding up the drying process but in reality this is entirely torture to your hat. Exposure to heat will definitely deteriorate the quality of the hat's material and damage it in time.
Don't subject your hat to abuse. Your cowboy hat is a hat, don't use it as a basket to gather fruits, or a money box to hold some coins. It is a head wear not a storage device. And if you plan to wear it on the rain, it's best that you get a rain cover for your hat. Your cowboy hat is indeed one of your most precious belongings. Extend its life and maintain its top quality by practicing these caring tips for your hat.

Cowboy Hat Prices

Cowboy hat prices depend on the quality of the hat. They are available in all range of prices. Now, the average price of cowboy hat ranges from $20 to $4000. The price depends on many factors.
Cowboy hat prices mainly depend on the material used for hat making. The traditional material used for hat making is felt, the fur of animals such as beaver, rabbit etc. The proportion of beaver fur vs. the rabbit fur in the felt, determines the cost of the felt. The standard of the hats are represented by X marking inside the crown of the hat. The cost of standard felt hat ranges from $70-$700. The 100% beaver fur hat price starts from $650. The 50% beaver fur hat is raffia available at $450. The recent rise in the cost of felt cowboy hats is due to scarcity of quality fur.
Economic cowboy hats are available in material such as straw, raffia etc. Straw hats are comparatively cheaper. Designer straw hats worth hundreds of dollars are also available. Palm leaf is another suitable material for the making of cowboy hats. They are durable and all-weather hats. The price varies with the quality of the straw and the weaving pattern. The lighter shapeable hats with better straw and tight weave are more popular. Its price starts from $20. Raffia hats are available from $5.99
Cowboy hat prices also depend on the ornamentation work done on the hats. Designer hats in striking colors with special studded jewels are more costly. The materials such as wool, lace, suede, cotton, satin, velour, leather etc are used for ornamenting the hats. The suede with attractive side chains costs around $50. The women?s cowboy hats feature variations in the crown shapes and brim sizes, which also reflects in the prices. Branded cowboy hats usually maintain high quality, which again results in higher prices. Stetson, Bailey, Shady Brady, Resistol, Billabong, Wrangler, Capelli etc are some of the famous brands.
